Mount Kitadake

Mt. Fuji viewed from Kitadake at first light

Mount Kitadake (Kita-dake), Yamanashi Prefecture, is probably one of the most picturesque viewing areas of Mount Fuji. The distance between the summits of Mount Kitadake and Mount Fuji is a total of 57km apart, and completely unobstructed.

It has a summit of just shy of 3,200m (10,500ft), making it the second tallest mountain in Japan, right after Mount Fuji, which is 3,776m (12,390ft).

This is NOT an easy walk to do, with a elevation change of roughly 1,700m over short period of time. However, It is far more rewarding than climbing Mt.Fuji, as there is far less people climbing.

To begin the climb, you will need to get to Norogawahirogawara Information Center. This can be accessed by bus (Click here for Schedule) from Kofu Station (Can be accessed from Tokyo with relative ease, but costly. Worth having a JR Rail pass if you’re wanting to go here!). The bus will cost 1,950JPY One way to the information center. Once you eventually get to the information center, that’s where the real adventure begins.

We must say before we continue with this article, WE ONLY RECOMMEND THIS TO EXPERIENCED CLIMBERS. Although the trail is well marked and maintained, accidents still do happen. If you have enough experience to climb, don’t be stupid and go off trail. Stick to the path.

Along the way, you will travel through a mixture of terrain, from rivers near the start, to the baron mountain peaks. Along the way, there will be huts which you can pay to stay at – check in usually at 3:00pm. You don’t need a reservation, so you can just show up and have a bed to sleep on. You will only need a reservation if you are wanting to eat food provided by the hut, however, if you bring your own food, then not a problem. Keep in mind that these huts aren’t luxurious, and many futons are in one room, so you might be sleeping next to a loud snorer, so a hut might not be a good idea if you have trouble sleeping.

Alternatively, you can be like other hikers and pitch a tent on the mountain and rest there. Many will pitch a short walk from the summit, so when the time comes, can easily pack it down and make an easy climb to the summit a short while before first light to get the best view of the rising sun by Mt.Fuji.
