Shuri Castle in Okinawa

Shuri Castle stands as the enduring symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom, perched on a hill overlooking Naha. Shuri Castle (首里城, Shurijō) once served administered the Ryukyu Kingdom which ruled over Okinawa for centuries. The castle was first built in the late 14th century, and played an essential role in the unification of the Okinawan islands.

Much like many other castles throughout Japan, the original 14th-century structure is long gone. Between wars and fires, traditional Japanese castles have had a long history of destruction. Shuri Castle is no different. However, Shuri Castle was destroyed a lot more recently. In 2019, a fire raged through the castle’s main hall, as well as several other prominent buildings.

Reconstruction efforts have commenced, with the aim of completing the main hall by autumn 2026. Despite the fire, visitors are still encouraged to visit and see the reconstruction efforts. While the main building has been destroyed, there are several historic buildings and gates to look at which were unscathed by the fire. Furthermore, thanks to the Castle’s hilltop location, visitors can enjoy some of the nicest views of Naha from the castle grounds.

The Seiden (Currently being rebuilt) is the castle’s main hall. It used to host major ceremonies, as the Seiden is the most lavishly decorated building in Okinawa. The Una Plaza, extending in front of the Seidan, was also used for ceremonies in the past. The North Hall (Hokuden), and the South Hall (Nanden) were also destroyed by the fire in 2019. Both halls served to welcome visitors from Mainland Japan and China.

The interiors of Nanden, Seiden, and Hokuden served as a museum before the fire, where visitors could view ancient artefacts and a replica of the Ryukyu Kingdom throne and crown. During the reconstruction, the museums are closed, and visitors have a limited travel path around the castle grounds.
