Washuzan Observatory

Scenic lookout over the Seto Ohashi Bridge

View of the Seto Ohashi Bridge from Washuzan Observatory

The Washuzan Observatory (鷲羽山展望台, Washūzan Tenbōdai) is a scenic lookout located on the outskirts of Kurashiki city, in Okayama Prefecture.  Washuzan is renowned for its remarkable views of the Seto Inland Sea and the impressive Seto Ohashi Bridge—a series of bridges connecting Honshu (Japan’s main island) to Shikoku across the sea.

The Washuzan observatory is perched on Mount Washuzan, with an altitude of 133 meters  (436ft). Washuzan translates to “Eagle Wing Mountain” due to its shape. From the viewpoint, you get stunning vistas of the Seto Ohashi Bridge. The Seto Ohashi Bridge spans 13.1 km, connecting several islands and remote communities as it stretches from Honshu to Shikoku.

Seldom visited by tourists, this bridge delivers as one of the most scenic off the track destinations in the Okayama region. Washuzan has several observation areas, and a short walking loop track. The walking loop should take about 15-20 minutes to complete, taking you from the main carpark, to a pavilion directly over the middle of the bridge. From the pavilion, you can watch as the cars emerge from a tunnel below you.
