Gifu Prefecture

Historic towns, lush mountains, traditional crafts, serene and scenic beauty.

Gifu prefecture, is in central Honshu (Japan’s main island). The prefecture has a population count of about 2,070,000. Gifu-shi is the captial city of the prefecture, and has a popularized a unique method of fishing, involving a well trained cormorant (Phalacrocoracidae). This method has been used since the 700’s.

Old traditional buildings and villages are plentiful. The mountains receive a lot a snow, so the majority of buildings in the highlands have steep slopped roofs so that the snow can slide off easily, preventing damage to the building.
