Onsen Etiquette

The basics of Japanese Onsen Etiquette

Hakone is known for their onsen

Japan’s natural hot springs, known as onsen (温泉), are one of the most relaxing and culturally rich experiences you can enjoy during your trip. Whether tucked in mountain villages or built into urban bathhouses, onsens are places of tranquility, healing, and tradition. However, they also come with a strict code of etiquette that’s important to follow. This guide will help you bathe confidently and respectfully.

Before You Go: Key Onsen Types

  • Public Onsen, Shared hot spring baths separated by gender.

  • Ryokan Onsen, Baths attached to traditional inns, often with both shared and private options.

  • Kashikiri Onsen, (貸切温泉) – Private baths available for reservation—ideal for couples or shy bathers.

  • Super Sento, Larger bath complexes, sometimes with themed rooms, saunas, and even restaurants.

  • Mixed Gender Onsen (混浴 / Konyoku), men and women bathe together, usually naked, though some facilities allow modesty towels or special bathing garments (Rare and phasing out due to changing cultural norms)

  • Family/Private Baths, (貸切風呂 / Kazokuburo), private onsens which you can rent by the hour, Great for couples, families, or anyone uncomfortable with public nudity.

Step-by-Step Onsen Etiquette

1. Remove Your Shoes 👟

At the entrance, take off your shoes and place them in a locker or on a shoe shelf. Indoor areas are usually kept pristine.

2. Pay or Check-in 💳

Some onsens require a ticket from a vending machine or check-in at reception. Towels may be provided or rented for a small fee.

3. Head to the change rooms and Get Naked 🔞

Onsens require bathers to bathe nude. Yes, it’s mandatory in most onsens, Swimwear is usually not allowed. Use the lockers or baskets in the changing area to store all your clothes. Take only a small towel into the bathing area (not for use in the water).

Tip: Use the small towel to cover yourself modestly when walking to the bath.

4. Wash Thoroughly 🧽🚿

Before entering the onsen, you must scrub yourself clean at the provided showers. Sit on the stool, use soap, shampoo, and rinse off all suds. Remember, everyone is bathing in the same water, cleanliness is non-negotiable.

5. No Towels in the Water 🚫🧻

Keep your small towel out of the bathwater. Place it on your head or leave it by the edge of the tub. Soaking it in the bath is considered unclean.

6. Enter Calmly and Quietly 🌿

Don’t splash or dive in. Enter slowly and relax. Keep your voice low, and any conversations to yourself. Onsens are spaces for quiet reflection and relaxation.

7. Respect Others’ Space 🚷

Maintain a reasonable distance from others in the bath. Avoid staring or engaging in conversations with strangers. Most bathers are there to unwind and relax.

8. No Photography 📷❌

Cameras and phones are strictly prohibited in the bathing areas to protect privacy of bathers. Unless you are in your own private onsen, photography is forbidden.

9. Tattoos May Be Banned 🐉

Many traditional onsens restrict entry for people with tattoos, which are still associated with organized crime in Japan. However, this attitude towards tattoos is slowly changing, and more places are welcoming tattoos.

Tip: Use a skin-colored patch to cover tattoos or look for tattoo-friendly onsens ahead of time.

10. Dry Off Before Re-entering the Locker Room 🧴

Use your towel to dry off before going back to the changing room. Don’t walk around dripping wet.

🚫 Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the pre-bath wash

  • Bringing phones or cameras

  • Talking loudly or swimming

  • Entering while intoxicated

  • Ignoring tattoo rules
