Narai juku is a well-preserved historical post town located in the Kiso Valley of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the many post town stations along the Nakasendō, an ancient route that connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto during the Edo period (1603–1868). Narai juku is particularly notable for its picturesque Edo-period wooden buildings, many of which have been carefully preserved or restored.

Narai-juku was one of the most prosperous post towns on the Nakasendō due to its strategic location at the halfway point of the route. Travelers, including merchants, samurai, and officials, would stop here to rest, trade, and gather supplies. The town was also known as the “town of 1,000 inns” due to a large number of accommodations available for weary travellers. Today, there are still hotels that operate in Narai Juku, but options are more limited these days.

Narai-juku is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government, recognizing its cultural and historical value. The town is also a popular destination for travelers interested in Japan’s history, architecture, and traditional crafts. Visitors can explore various historical sites, such as the Nakamura Residence, the Kiso-hinoki Museum, and the preserved Kosatsuba (notice board) that once displayed official proclamations.

The annual Narai-juku Festival, held in September, features processions, performances, and other cultural events that celebrate the town’s heritage.

Accessing Narai Juku

Narai Juku is located along the JR Chuo Line from Matsumoto City. By train from Matsumoto Station, the journey will take about 40 minutes one way, and costs as little as 590JPY. This train service is a shared Shinonoi / Chuo Line, which operates to Narai Juku every 60-90 minutes (or about) from Matsumoto Station.

For those coming by Car, the best place to park is behind the JR Narai Station. There is limited parking, and there is a 500JPY charge for parking, operating on the honor system.
