Shikoku

Temple Pilgrimages, Historic castles, and a Relaxing Vibe

The Shikoku region sits just south of Honshu and is the smallest of Japan’s four main islands, and consists of four prefectures. For travellers, it offers a quieter, more regional and authentic Japanese experience. There is far less about headline attractions, and Shikoku is more about landscapes, local culture, and a slower pace of travel.

Shikoku is closely associated with the Shikoku Pilgrimage, a circular route linking 88 temples connected to the monk Kūkai. While some visitors undertake the full pilgrimage, many engage with it in smaller ways, just visiting a handful of temples or simply being aware of the pilgrims who are still a common sight across the island.

Food in Shikoku is simple and regional. The most recognisable example is Sanuki udon in Kagawa, where small, casual eateries focus on consistency rather than presentation. Furthermore, on the island of Shodoshima, there is a rare variety of Wagyu beef, in which the cows are fed olives, creating a unique, buttery flavour. Elsewhere, seafood and local produce tend to dominate, often reflecting what’s available in each area.
