The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is perhaps one of Japan’s most significant and moving museums. Inside, visitors can reflect on the damage caused by the devastating Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945, and gaze upon many of the relics that were destroyed by the blast. This eye-opening museum serves as a lasting memory of the damaged inflicted upon Hiroshima in World War II.
First opened in 1955, 10 years after the bombing, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is now a must-see when in Hiroshima.
Many museum goers leave the museum with a newfound appreciation of the damage and hope that the world never again has to see such devastation. The devastation of the atomic blast can still be seen just outside of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, at the Genbaku Dome – otherwise known as the Atomic Bomb Dome. The Genbaku Dome remarkably withstood most of the blast, and stands preserved just a few hundred meters from the hypocenter. Furthermore, directly outside the Museum, visitors can find the Peace Memorial Park, which commemorates the victims of the bombing.
