Tsuruga Castle, otherwise known as Aizuwakamatsu Castle

Aizuwakamatsu is a castle town in Fukushima Prefecture. Once a stronghold of the Aizu Clan, the city played a significant role during the Boshin War in the late 1860s, when samurai loyal to the shogunate made their final stand against the imperial forces.

The city is known for its fine sake breweries, soothing hot springs, and traditional crafts like Aizu lacquerware. Nearby attractions such as Ouchijuku, a preserved Edo-period post town, and Mount Bandai for skiing and hiking.

Getting to Aizuwakamatsu

Aizuwakamatsu is located inland in Fukushima Prefecture. It can easily be accessed by train either from Tokyo to the south, or Sendai from from the North.

 

From Tokyo:

Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo station to Koriyama Station. From Koriyama Station, transfer to the Ban-Etsusai Line to Aizu-wakamatsu Station. This will take about 3 hours, and cost 9,640JPY One way and is covered by the JR Pass.

From Sendai

Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Sendai Station bound for Tokyo to Koriyama Station. At Koriyama Station, transfer to the Ban-Etsusai Line to Aizu-wakamatsu Station. This will take about 2 hours, and cost 6,780JPY One way, and is covered by the JR Pass.
