Ivy covered building in the heart of Kurashiki
The Kurashiki Ivy Square (倉敷アイビースクエア), is a series of ivy covered brick buildings in the Kurashiki Historical Bikan Quarter. Once the site of the first cotton mill in Japan, the Kurashiki Ivy Square complex now includes a museum, several shops, restaurants and a hotel. Originally built in 1889 as the Kurabo Spinning Works (Kurashiki Bosekijo), it is now a charming hub in Kurashiki.
The former spinning works was thoughtfully transformed in 1974 into Hotel Ivy Square, café, shops, and cultural facilities. Later, in 2007, the site was designated a Heritage of Industrial Modernization.
Today at the Kurashiki Ivy Square, you can find several activities, including the Kurabo Mueseum (open 10:00am – 4:00pm, 300JPY), a small museum which illustrates the history of the Kurabo Spinning Works. You can also find the quirky Piggy Bank Museum (10:30am to 5:00pm, 300JPY) a short walk away from the square.
The Kurashiki Ivy Square is found in the Kurashiki Historical Bikan Quarter, just a short 15 minute walk from Kurashiki Station.
