Suizenji Garden in Kumamoto Prefecture

The Suizenji Garden (水前寺成趣園, Suizenji Jōjuen), in the east of Kumamoto City, is a spawling Japanese garden landscape. The Suizenji Gardens date back to the 17th Century, built by the ruling lords of the time, the Hosokawa family.

The Suizenji Garden is known as a traditional kaiyū-shiki teien (strolling garden), designed to be enjoyed by walking along a circular path that reveals different scenic views at each turn. It’s a popular place for locals and tourists alike.

Notably, the garden features a miniature representation of the 53 post stations of the Tōkaidō, the historic road connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. A notable feature is the artificial hill symbolosing Mount Fuji.

The Suizenji Garden has seasonal beauty, with plum groves that bloom in the early spring before cherry blossoms take over around early to mid april, and then with the vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows in Autumn.
