Magome, also known as Magome-juku, is a charming town located in the Gifu prefecture of Japan. This town is part of the Kiso Valley, which is a popular destination for tourists due to its traditional architecture and natural beauty. Magome was once a post town (stopping over point on long distance journeys cross country), and is particularly famous for its well-preserved and beautifully restored Edo period streets, which offer a glimpse into Japan’s past.
One of the most interesting things about Magome is its location on the Nakasendo Trail, an ancient route that connected Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo) during the Edo period. The Nakasendo Trail was once a bustling road lined with inns and restaurants, and travelers would stop in towns like Magome to rest and replenish before continuing their journey. Today, visitors can still walk a portion of the Nakasendo Trail and see some of the original buildings that served travelers centuries ago. As you walk the streets, you can see the history of this small town which offers a rare insight to a different era.
Magome is also known for its traditional wooden houses, which have been beautifully preserved over the years. These houses have steep roofs and wooden facades that give them a unique character. Visitors can explore the town’s streets and see these houses up close, and many of them have been converted into shops and restaurants that offer a taste of local culture.
Another must-see attraction in Magome is the Magome-juku Museum, which tells the story of the town and its importance during the Edo period. The museum has a variety of exhibits, including traditional clothing and tools, and offers a fascinating look at life in Japan centuries ago.
