Kaminoyama Castle, located in the city of Kaminoyama in Yamagata Prefecture, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back over 400 years.

Kaminoyama Castle was originally built in 1535 by Lord Yamagata Masakage, a powerful warlord of the Sengoku period. The castle was strategically located on top of a hill overlooking the surrounding area, making it an ideal location for military defense. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands many times as various lords and daimyos fought for control of the region.

One of the most famous residents of Kaminoyama Castle was the famous samurai warrior, Date Masamune. Masamune was the lord of the nearby Sendai domain and is widely regarded as one of the greatest warriors in Japanese history. During his time at Kaminoyama Castle, Masamune made many improvements to the castle, including adding a five-story tower and a large stone wall.

Today, the original castle that housed is long gone, standing in it’s place a recreation of the original castle. Visitors to Kaminoyama Castle can explore the castle grounds and learn about its rich history. The castle has been extensively restored and renovated over the years, with many of the original structures still standing. Some of the highlights of the castle include the impressive stone walls, the five-story tower, and the beautiful gardens that surround the castle.

Kaminoyama Castle is a short 15 minute, 1.2km walk from JR Kaminoyamaonsen Station. 

From Yamagata Station to Kaminoyamaonsen Station, it is about a 12 minute train ride on the Yamagata Line, costing 240JPY.
