Beppu has over 2,800 hot springs, making it one of the largest hot spring regions in Japan. The hot springs are classified into eight types, each with different properties and health benefits. Visitors can experience these hot springs by visiting the various hot spring baths, or “onsen,” located throughout the city. One of the best views of the hot springs can be seen from the Yukemuri Observation Deck, known for unobstructed views of dozens of ryokans. During the cooler months, steam plumes are prevalent in the skyline. It should be noted that during Summer, the steam plumes are less obvious due to the warmer weather.
Aside from hot springs, Beppu is also known for its traditional Japanese culture, such as the Beppu Onsen Festival, where locals dress up in traditional clothing and perform traditional dances. The city also has a number of historical and cultural sites, including the Beppu Castle Ruins, the Beppu Art Museum, and the Global Tower.
