The Tojinbo Cliffs are a scenic destination on the Fukui Prefecture coastline. They are best known for the rugged basalt cliffs that stretch for about a kilometre and rise to 30 meters above the sea. Many pillars are shaped like hexagons and pentagons, which is a unique geological feature seldom seen elsewhere in the world. They are believed to have been formed approximately 13 million years ago by volcanic activity and erosion. Local folklore says it was named after a violent monk who fell to his death off these rugged basalt cliffs.
The Tojinbo cliffs can be explored by the well-maintained walking trail that spans the length of the cliffs, providing a safe way to view the pillars. Sightseeing boats also depart from the base of the cliffs, providing visitors with a unique perspective on the actual size of these pillars. Boats operate according to the conditions and take approximately 30 minutes to complete each circuit.
For an aerial perspective of the Tojinbo coast, the Tojinbo Tower, located towards the carparking area, is a 55m tall observation tower which provides unobstructed panoramic views of the coastline.
