Oyama Jinja Shrine in Kanazawa

Situated between Kanazawa Castle Park and the Nagamachi Samurai District,  sits Oyama Shrine (尾山神社). Established in 1873 to commemorate Maeda Toshiie, the influential first lord of the Kaga Domain, the shrine plays an important role in preserving the legacy of the Maeda family and Kanazawa’s samurai heritage.

The shrine’s most recognisable feature is the Shinmon Gate, completed in 1875. Its design is an intriguing combination of Japanese, Chinese, and Western influences, highlighted by stained-glass panels on the upper level, an uncommon feature for a Shinto shrine. Historically, the gate also served as a lighthouse, guiding ships approaching the coastline, adding another layer of character to this striking structure.

Beyond the gate, the shrine grounds open into a modest yet beautifully maintained Japanese garden, complete with a pond, stone lanterns, and a small arched bridge. The setting is peaceful and understated, offering a welcome break from the busier attractions nearby.

Thanks to its central location, Oyama Shrine is an easy addition to a walking route that includes Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle, and the surrounding historic districts.
