Kaimondake

Mt. Fuji of the south

Silhouette of Kaimondake, or Mt. Kaimon in Kagoshima with a striking red sunset.

Mt. Kaimon, also known as Kaimondake (開聞岳), is a stunning, conical (stratovolcano) volcano located on the Satsuma Peninsula. Often referred to as the Fuji of the south, the volcano can be seen jutting out of the land by the ocean, in one of Kyushu’s southernmost points. The dormant, but still classified as an active volcano, stands at 924 meters (3031 feet) tall.

Kaimondake is a popular hiking destination in the south of Japan. With a hiking trail up this volcanic landscape, those who manage to scale the mountain are treated to panoramic ocean views, allowing for views towards Kagoshima, and out towards the prefecture’s island retreats of Yakushima and Tanegashima. The hiking trails have challenging sections, but most people with a moderate level of fitness and some prior hiking experience can complete them. The climb is expected to take between 2-4 hours for most hikers.
