Kagoshima City

Kyushu’s southernmost major city

View of Sakurajima from Kagoshima

Kagoshima City is one of Kyushu’s largest and most interesting cities, hosting one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. Overlooking Kagoshima is Sakurajima, sitting in the Kagoshima Bay, and erupts frequently – sometimes as often as daily. Ash plumes shooting high into the sky, and become part of daily life in the city. While local residents are accustomed to occasional ashfall, visitors often find witnessing an eruption to be one of the city’s most memorable experiences.

Much like the rest of Kyushu, Kagoshima City offers a relaxed atmosphere, a rich samurai heritage, beautiful waterfront parks, and excellent local cuisine.
