The Omotesando Shopping Street on Miyajima

The Omotesando Shopping Street is a popular shopping street on the island of Miyajima, in Hiroshima Prefecture. The street is lively and lined closely with shops, stalls, and street food. The shopping street is about 300 meters long (approximately 970 feet) and lined with shops on both sides, and is used by visitors to the island as they walk from the Miyajima Ferry Terminal to the Itsukushima Shrine

One of the most popular things to try at the Omotesandō Shopping Street is ‘momiji manju’ or a fried maple leaf. There are numerous stalls that sell Miyajima’s signature dish along this bustling shopping street. Another local speciality you can find on the shopping street is eels and oysters – both an iconic dish the island is famous for.

The street is also where you can find the best souvenirs on the island. Miyajima is also the home of the modern Japanese rice paddle, otherwise known as shamoji. While rice paddles have been around for centuries, the modern design that you can see made today originated in on the island of Miyajima in the 18th century.  You can find numerous handcrafted shamoji on the island for sale, which make for great practical souvenirs.
