- Quick Summary
Itsukushima Shrine, located on the sacred island of Miyajima (officially Itsukushima), is one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks. Famous for its 16.2-meter-tall “floating” torii gate and shrine buildings that appear to float on the sea at high tide, it’s a must-visit destination in Hiroshima Prefecture. Itsukushima Shrine is designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the most significant places in Japan.
Built in 593 CE and expanded in 1168 by the powerful military leader Taira no Kiyomori, Itsukushima Shrine has served as a place of worship for over 1,400 years. It is dedicated to the three daughters of the Shinto sea god Susano-o no Mikoto, who are believed to protect sailors and ensure safe voyages.
In the Shinto belief, Miyajima Island itself is considered sacred, so the shrine was ingeniously constructed over water to allow worshippers to pay respects without setting foot on the holy ground. Even today, births and deaths are prohibited on the island to maintain its purity—a tradition that’s still respected by locals.
Itsukushima Shrine takes on two entirely different apperances, depending on the tide. At high tide, the shrine and torii gate appear to be floating a top the water. However, at low tide, you can see and walk out to the torii gate and pass through it on the sandy bay. The shrine and Torii gate are also illuminated after dark daily until 11:00pm, which provides those staying overnight on Miyajima a unique perspective of the shrine.
Itsukushima Shrine is stunning year-round, but especially beautiful during autumn foliage season (late Nov) and cherry blossom season (early April). Arrive early or stay late to avoid the tour groups and enjoy the peaceful, almost mystical atmosphere.
