Gifu Prefecture (岐阜県, Gifu-ken) is a large prefecture in central Honshu (Japan’s main island). The prefecture has a population count of about 2,070,000.
Gifu Prefecture is known as a mountainous region, and visitors can find serval old traditional buildings in small, remote villages which are plentiful. Parts of Gifu get a lot of snow during winter, so the majority of buildings in the highlands have steep slopped roofs so that the snow can slide off easily, preventing damage to the building in a building style known as Gassho-Zukuri.
Gifu City is the captial city of the prefecture, and has a popularized a unique method of fishing, involving a well trained cormorant bird (Phalacrocoracidae). This method has been used since the 700s.
