Mt.Hakodate

View from Mt. Hakodate Observatory, one of the best night views in Japan, with the Hakodate Ropeway in the foreground

The Mt.Hakodate Observatory is the go-to sight n Hakodate. Renowned as one of the top three best night time views in Japan, the observatory is popular among locals and tourists alike. The night view from the Mt. Hakodate Observatory  is considered one of the most beautiful in Japan, often described as a “million-dollar view.” Visitors can see the city of Hakodate illuminated against the backdrop of the Tsugaru Strait.

At a height of 334m above sea level, the Mt. Hakodate Observatory offers stunning views of the city. While known for the night view, regardless of the time of day, Mt.Hakodate provides visitors with a stunning view of Hakodate City, the Hakodate Port, the arching coastline, and the mountain range to the North of Hakodate.

The most popular route to the top observatory is via the Mt.Hakodate Observatory Ropeway, a cable car system that takes you to the top of the mountain. The total travel time from the base to the summit is just 3 minutes. A return ticket costs 1800JPY, and a one-way ticket will cost 1200JPY. The ropeway is open from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, but the most popular time is sunset to dark. At quiet times, the ropeway operates on a 15-minute frequency, but at peak time, this is increased to every 5 minutes.

Due to the proximity to ocean, fast and chilly winds are common year round. Please ensure that you plan your clothing appropriately.
