Mt.Misen, also known as Mount Misen (弥山), is a prominent peak on the island of Miyajima, also known as Itsukushima, in Japan. Miyajima is a small island located in the Inland Sea of Japan, just off the coast of Hiroshima. Mt.Misen is not only a significant natural landmark but also a place of cultural and religious importance.
Mt.Misen is the highest peak on Miyajima Island, standing at approximately 535 meters (1,755 feet) above sea level. It is a popular hiking destination due to its scenic beauty and natural surroundings.
Miyajima Island is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks. The shrine is known for its “floating” torii gate, which appears to be partially submerged during high tide. Mt. Misen is considered a sacred mountain, and its vicinity is closely associated with the shrine.
There are several hiking trails that lead to the summit of Mt. Misen, offering different levels of difficulty and scenic views along the way. The hiking paths pass through lush forests, picturesque rock formations, and interesting geological features. The most popular route is the Momijidani Course, which starts near the Momijidani Park and takes hikers through the Momijidani Valley.
At the summit of Mt.Misen, there is an observation deck known as Shishiiwa, which provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding islands, Seto Inland Sea, and Hiroshima Bay. The summit area also features a small shrine and various rock formations.
For those who want to make it up the summit without hiking, the Miyajima Ropeway is a perfect alternative. The Miyajima Ropeway is a cablecar system that takes you near the summit of the Mt.Misen, to Shishiiwa Observatory, which provides a stunning view of the island. A short walk from Shishiiwa Station, you can find the summit, and another observation deck.
Mt.Misen is beautiful year-round, but it is particularly renowned for its autumn foliage. The fall colors, including vibrant red and orange leaves, attract numerous visitors during the autumn season.
