The Tsukiji Outer Market is Tokyo’s infamous food district located just outside the former Tsukiji Wholesale Market site in central Tokyo. While the famous tuna auctions moved to Toyosu Market in 2018, the outer market remains very much alive, consisting of narrow lanes lined with seafood vendors, produce stalls, kitchenware shops, and casual eateries. It continues to serve professional chefs and everyday visitors alike despite the tuna auctions relocating across the city.
Visitors typically come to Tsukiji Outer Market to gaze at the infamous market and to sample fresh seafood, including sushi, sashimi, grilled scallops, and tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette). Food can be enjoyed at the tsukiji market itself, or taken away for you to enjoy throughout the day. The market is most active in the morning through to the early afternoon, and while it can become crowded, especially on weekends, it remains an accessible and rewarding stop for those interested in trying some of Tokyo’s freshest seafood. Most shops typically open around 8:00 am and close by early to mid afternoon.
Due to the popularity of the Tsukiji market, expect to pay more than you would elsewhere in the city for similar bowls. Some vendors have been known to inflate the prices to cater more towards the tourist market.
A great way to see the market is through guided tours with tour guides who know the market like the back of their hands. The Tsukiji Outer Market can certainly be chaotic at times, so it’s helpful to have a guide who knows the best spots.
