Tips for Travelling with Families

Traveling to Japan with your family can be an amazing experience! Here are five essential tips to make your trip smooth and enjoyable:

1. Plan Around Your Kids’ Needs

  • Japan is family-friendly, but the fast-paced travel culture can be tiring for little ones. Japan is the land of countless staircases, which can tire out children quickly. Take breaks often, and travel lightly if you can.
  • Choose a mix of activities—some sightseeing and some fun for the kids (like theme parks, aquariums, animal cafes, or hands-on museums).
  • Schedule breaks and rest days, especially if you’re moving between cities.

2. Use a Suica or Pasmo Card for Easy Transport

  • These rechargeable IC cards make getting around on trains, buses, and even some shops much easier. IC Cards take away the need for paper tickets, reducing the likelihood of tickets getting lost.

3. Book Family-Friendly Accommodation

  • Many Japanese hotel rooms are small, so consider booking family rooms, serviced apartments, or ryokan (traditional inns).

4. Know Where to Find Kid-Friendly Meals

  • Japan has plenty of kid-friendly food—ramen, sushi, rice bowls, and convenience store snacks.
  • Many family restaurants (like Saizeriya or Coco’s) offer kids’ menus and high chairs.
  • If you have picky eaters, keep an eye out for food courts in department stores with a variety of choices.

5. Take Advantage of Japan’s Child-Friendly Facilities

  • Many train stations, malls, and attractions have baby-changing rooms and nursing areas.
  • Renting a stroller is possible at some tourist spots, but bringing a lightweight, foldable stroller is best for city travel.
  • Look for “jidohanbaiki” (vending machines) that sell drinks and snacks to keep the kids happy on the go.
