Mount Maya (摩耶山, Maya-san) is one of the most iconic mountains in the Rokko mountain range, located in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Standing at 698.6 meters, it’s a popular destination for both locals and tourists thanks to its scenic views and nightscape, all within a short train ride from central Kobe.

Mount Maya is famous for its breathtaking night view over Kobe, Osaka Bay, and even as far as Wakayama on clear days. While the day-time view from Mount Maya is worth viewing in it’s own right, the night view from the Kikuseidai Observatory is often ranked among Japan’s Top Three Night Views, alongside Mt. Hakodate in Hokkaido and Mount Inasa in Nagasaki. “Kikuseidai” means “a place to scoop stars,” and the name reflects the dazzling panorama.

To reach the summit of Mount Maya, one of the most scenic peaks in the Rokko mountain range, visitors can take a combination of the Maya Cable Car and the Maya Ropeway, collectively known as the Maya Viewline. This charming and historic route not only provides a convenient way up the mountain but also offers spectacular views of the forested slopes and Kobe cityscape along the way.

The Maya Cable Car began operation in 1925, making it one of the oldest cable railways in Japan. It ascends from Maya Cable Station at the base of the mountain to Niji no Eki Station (Rainbow Station), nestled mid-mountain. From there, passengers transfer to the Maya Ropeway, which first opened in 1955. The ropeway continues the journey to Hoshi no Eki Station (Star Station), located near the summit and the famous Kikuseidai Observatory.

There are also several hiking trails on the mountain, which take about 1-2 hours to hours to complete, depending on speed and ability. The walking tracks can be steep in places, but are suitable for novice climbers.
