Hakone Tozan Railway

Railway that snakes up a mountain leading to Hakone

A train car on the Hakone Tozan Railway

The Hakone Tozan Railway is one of Japan’s most scenic mountain railways, offering travellers a unique and relaxing journey through the heart of Hakone’s natural beauty. Originally opened in 1919, this historic railway connects Odawara Station to Gora Station, passing through hot spring towns, lush forests, and steep mountain slopes along the way.

The lower section, from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto Station, is unremarkable. However, the section from Hakone-Yumoto Station to Gora Station is spectacular. As Japan’s oldest mountain railway, the line is known for its switchback turns, a technique that allows the train to climb steep gradients by reversing direction at several points. While you may find a seat facing forward, you will quickly find yourself seated backwards. It takes approximately 60 minutes to get from Odawara, to Gora Station. The Hakone Free Pass covers the line from Odawara Station to Gora Station.

Key stops & Stations;

  • Odawara Station: Start of the line, easily accessible via the JR Tokaido Line or Shinkansen.

  • Hakone-Yumoto Station: Main gateway to Hakone, with ryokan inns and onsen nearby.

  • Miyanoshita Station: Near luxury resorts and historic hotels.

  • Gora Station: Transfer point to the Hakone Cable Car and access to the Hakone Open-Air Museum and beyond.

The Hakone Tozan Railway is most popular during June and July, when thousands of hydrangea bushes (ajisai) bloom alongside the tracks. There are even special night trains from around mid-June to mid-July, which showcase the hydrangea bushes illuminated. These special trains depart twice per evening and require seat reservations in advance.
