Sengan-en Garden (仙巌園) is a traditional Japanese-style landscape garden located to the north of Kagoshima city. The garden has roots dating back to 1658, when it was constructed by the local ruling Shimazu Clan, who were among the most powerful clans during Japan’s feudal era.

One highlight of Sengan-en is the view of one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, Sakurajima, which sits in the Kagoshima Bay.

Centred in Sengan-en, you can find the Iso Residence, also known as the Iso Palace. It was used as a residence for the Shimazu family and dates back to the construction of the garden, although some renovation work was undertaken in the late 1880s to repair damage. Today, visitors can take a walk through the old Iso Residence, preserved to how it was when the renovations were completed in the 1890s.

Within the Sengan-en, you can find hundreds of unique plant species, one-of-a-kind views, cute shops, and various cultural activities (extra cost, varies by activity).

In the mid-1800s, during Japan’s push to modernize in the wake of the Industrial Revolution, the Shuseikan Industrial Complex was established on part of the Sengan-en grounds to meet the growing demand for iron production. Although the complex itself no longer stands, remnants can still be seen throughout the garden, most notably the reverberatory furnace located just inside the main gates. Just outside of the gardens’ gates, the Shoko Shuseikan Museum preserves many of the original machines from this era and showcases how the Shimazu clan transitioned from feudal rulers to pioneers of Japanese industrialisation.
