Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a large and beautiful park located in the heart of Tokyo. It is one of the most popular and diverse parks in the city, offering a serene escape from the urban hustle and bustle. The expansive garden covers about 58 hectares (144 acres) of the bustling Shinjuku district, offering visitors a quiet place to escape to for lunch or a simple stroll in the park.
Originally, the land was the private residence of a feudal lord, Lord Naito, during the Edo period. In 1906 following the Meiji Restoration, it became an imperial garden for the royal family before opening to the public after World War II.
Throughout the year, Shinjuku Gyoen hosts various events, including flower exhibitions, cultural festivals, and traditional tea ceremonies.
The Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden features over 1,000 cherry trees of various types, providing a staggered bloom and prolonged cherry blossom season. This extensive collection of cherry trees makes it a popular destination during the cherry blossom season (Hanami). In addition to cherry blossoms, the park features a wide variety of plants, flowers, and trees, including plum blossoms, azaleas, and more.
Shinjuku Gyoen houses several greenhouses that showcase different climates and plant species. The tropical, subtropical, and traditional Japanese greenhouses allow visitors to experience a wide range of botanical wonders.
