Arashiyama District

Famous District in Western Kyoto

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of top things to see and do in Kyoto

The Arashiyama district is a beautiful and culturally rich area located on the western outskirts of Kyoto City, Japan. Known for its natural beauty, historical sites, and traditional charm, Arashiyama is a popular destination for both tourists and locals.

One of the most iconic sights in Arashiyama is the Bamboo Grove, a serene path lined with towering bamboo stalks that seem to stretch endlessly into the sky. Walking through this grove feels almost otherworldly, with the tall bamboo swaying gently in the breeze. The grove is particularly beautiful during the early morning or late afternoon when the light filters softly through the bamboo.

Similarly, another highlight of the district is Tenryu-ji – one of the most important zen temples in Kyoto and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in 1339, the temple is known for its beautiful Zen garden, which features a stunning pond surrounded by rocks, trees, and seasonal plants. The garden is designed to reflect the changing seasons and is especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange.
