Ginza

Tokyo's Luxury Shopping District

Tokyo Ginza

Ginza is a busy shopping district in Tokyo, about a 10-minute walk away from Tokyo Station. Ginza is known for being a more upmarket shopping district, home to some of the world’s most iconic brands. It is also home to one of the most expensive real estate in Japan, thanks to the area up-market atmopshere and proximity to Tokyo Station.

The shopping district is open all week, with many businesses open 7 days a week. On weekend afternoons from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm (5:00 pm from October through March), the Chuo Dori street is closed to motor vehicles and pedestrianised, allowing shoppers to mill about and shop. Chuo Dori is one of the busiest shopping streets in Ginza, home to several large shopping complexes and luxury good stores, such as Bulgari and Chanel.

The Ginza district was home to a silver coin mint from 1612 to 1800 during the Edo Period. The name ‘Ginza’ literally translates into ‘Silver Mint’, and because of this history, the district eventually became known as Ginza.

The main shopping complexes in Ginza are;

  • Seiko House Ginza – featuring the Iconic ‘Seiko Clock tower’, a symbol of the district, and home to the Wako Department store, which trades watches, jewellery and other accessories.
  • Ginza Six – The largest shopping complex in the district, home to numerous floors selling items related to interior design, books, and food.
  • Matsuya – Nationwide department store, which has all of the typical mall offerings one would expect across its 11 floors.
