The Hamarikyu Gardens (浜離宮, Hama Rikyū) are a relaxing, expansive garden space in central Tokyo. Located along the Tokyo Bay, Hamarikyu features seawater ponds which change level with the tides, and a teahouse on a small island.
The gardens originally served as a duck hunting grounds for the feudal lord’s residence during the Edo era. It later just became a strolling garden for the imperial family, but then it opened to the public in 1946 for all to enjoy.
The Hamarikyu Gardens offer seasonal beauty. While the Hamarikyu gardens aren’t not known for any particular season, they do offer year-round enjoyment. The spring is popular, with plum blossoms from late february, and the cherry blossoms towards April. As late autumn rolls around, the gardens have plenty of maple and ginko leaves, which both have vivid colours from mid-October onwards.
Just a short walk away, you can find the Kyu Shiba Rikyu Gardens, another popular garden along the Tokyo Bay.
