The Miyajima Aquarium, also called the Miyajima Public Aquarium (宮島水族館), is a small aquarium located on the western side of the Island of Miyajima. This small aquarium offers families a great place to explore, have fun, and learn about the nearby Seto Island Sea of Japan.

The aquarium spans across 2 floors, and about 13,000 sea creatures across 350 species. It showcases regional species found nearby such as It showcases regional species such as oysters, sea bream, and spotted garden eels – including an exhibit of a traditional Oyster Raft, as Miyajima is famous for it’s Oysters.

Access

The Miyajima Aquarium can be found about a 5 minute walk past the Itsukushima Shrine. Simply follow the coastline along past the shrine, and you’ll be there in just a few minutes. 

To get to Miyajima, you need to catch a ferry onto the island. Both JR West Miyajima Ferry, and the Miyajima Matsudai Kisen Ferry. Both offer more or less the same experience and cost the same. One notable difference between the two operators, is that the fare on the  JR West Miyajima Ferry is covered by some JR Rail Passes.

From Hiroshima, take the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station, from there, the ferry terminal is just outside.
