Hakone Checkpoint in Kanagawa Prefecture

The Hakone Checkpoint, also known as the Hakone Sekisho, was a historical checkpoint located in Japan, in the town of Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. It was one of the many checkpoints established during Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868), which was characterized by strict isolationist policies and centralized control by the Tokugawa shogunate. The main purpose of these checkpoints was to monitor and control the movement of people and goods along major roads, thereby ensuring peace and security during the largely peaceful Edo period.

The Hakone Checkpoint played a significant role in the Tokaido, which was one of the five major highways that connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to other important regions of Japan. The Tokaido was a vital transportation route, connecting the capital to Kyoto, the imperial capital during that period. It was also used by daimyo (feudal lords), samurai, traders, and travelers. The checkpoint was strategically located in Hakone, a town known for its hot springs, which were a popular destination for travellers.

Today, the Hakone Checkpoint has been restored and transformed into a historical site and open-air museum, known as the Hakone Sekisho Shiryokan (Hakone Checkpoint Museum). Visitors can explore the reconstructed buildings, gates, and facilities, gaining insights into the Edo period and the important role the checkpoint played in maintaining order and control along the Tokaido highway. This site is not only a historical attraction but also offers a picturesque setting with scenic views of the surrounding Hakone area.

The checkpoint was equipped with various defensive measures, including barriers and guardhouses. It served as a security point, and guards were stationed there to respond to any potential threats. In addition to security functions, the Hakone Checkpoint also provided travelers with amenities like rest areas, stables, and food stalls. This helped make the checkpoint a more welcoming stop for those passing through.
