Nikkō is a small historic mountain town in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, best known for its ornate UNESCO Shrines and temples, including the famous and lavish Tōshōgū Shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Nikkō township marks the entrance to the Nikkō National Park, and is surrounded by lush forests, tall mountains, waterfalls, and hot springs, and is celebrated as one of the Tohoku region’s most popular destinations.
Nikkō has been a sacred site for centuries, developing as a centre of Shinto and Buddhist worship from the 8th century when the monk Shōdō founded the first temple in the area. Accessing Nikkō
From Tokyo, Nikko can be reached in numerous ways, taking around 2-3 hours.
The quickest way to reach from Tokyo is to take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Utsunomiya Station (Approximately 45 Mins, 5020 JPY) and then take the Nikko Line (Approx. 40 Mins, 770 JPY) from Utsunomiya Station to Nikko Station. Both the Shinkansen & JR Nikko Line are included in the JR Pass.
Alternatively, from Tokyo, take the Chiyoda Line from Nijubashimae Station to Kitasenju Station (15 minutes) on the Tokyo Metro. Then, transfer to the Tobu Railway Express Line to Tobu-Nikko (1 hour 40 minutes). This costs 3350 One way and is not covered by the JR Pass.
