Nikkō is a small historic mountain town in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, best known for its ornate UNESCO Shrines and temples, including the famous and lavish Tōshōgū Shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Nikkō township marks the entrance to the Nikkō National Park, and is surrounded by lush forests, tall mountains, waterfalls, and hot springs, and is celebrated as one of the Tohoku region’s most popular destinations.
Nikkō has been a sacred site for centuries, developing as a centre of Shinto and Buddhist worship from the 8th century when the monk Shōdō founded the first temple in the area. Its importance grew in the 17th century with the construction of the lavish Tōshōgū Shrine. Over time, the town also became a retreat for nature and culture, drawing visitors for its shrines, scenic mountains, and spectacular autumn colours.
