The iconic Shinkyo Bridge.

The Shinkyo Bridge (神橋, “Sacred Bridge”) is an iconic and sacred bridge in Nikko, known for its striking vermilion finish. Belonging to Futarasan Shrine, the Shinkyo Bridge is the gateway to Nikko’s historic shrines and temples.

The current structure dates back to 1636, though it has been restored multiple times due to flood damage, as well as modern strengthening to remain safe to this day. Until 1973, the bridge was off-limits to the general public because it was regarded as a sacred structure. For centuries, the bridge was reserved for the Shogun and imperial messengers when they came to worship at Nikko’s shrines and temples. However, after renovations in the late 1900s and early 2000s, the bridge was opened to the public.

There is an entrance fee to walk across this iconic bridge in an effort to preserve and fund the upkeep of this bridge; however, there are several free viewing areas.
