Akechidaira Ropeway (明智平ロープウェイ) offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the town of Nikko, in Tochigi Prefecture. Located along the Irohazaka Winding Road, this short but spectacular cable car ride lifts visitors to a viewpoint overlooking the Kegon Waterfall, Lake Chuzenji, Mt. Nantai and the surrounding peaks of the Nikko National Park. It’s often called the best viewpoint in Nikko.
The ropeway starts at Akechidaira Plateau, where there’s a parking area, souvenir shop, and observation deck. The cable car takes about three minutes to reach the upper station, but in that short time, visitors are rewarded with sweeping vistas that stretch across the mountains and valleys below. From the top, the Akechidaira Observation Deck provides an unbeatable perspective of Kegon Falls cascading dramatically from Lake Chuzenji — a sight especially stunning during autumn when the forest blazes with color.
The ropeway is open year-round, and each season offers its own charm. Spring brings fresh greenery, summer offers clear mountain skies, autumn explodes with vibrant foliage, and winter covers the landscape in a blanket of snow. Photographers and nature lovers alike will find endless inspiration here.

Accessing Akechidaira Ropeway
The Akechidaira Ropeway is a short drive or bus ride from central Nikko. If you’re coming by public transport, the Tobu Bus from Nikko Station heading toward Lake Chuzenji or Yumoto Onsen stops directly at Akechidaira (明智平). Buses from Nikko Station typically cost around 1250JPY one way. Because the ropeway is weather-dependent, it’s best to check conditions before visiting, especially during windy or foggy days when services may pause for safety.
To help get you around easily, we recommend getting the 4 Day Nikko All Area Pass. This pass allows you to hop on and off the buses in the Nikko area, as well as offering discounts on select activities. If you are staying in Nikko for two or more nights, then this pass enables you to easily and quickly get around while saying you money.
