Nara

Japan's first capital, known as a place where the deer roam free.

Nara, the Capital of Nara Prefecture, is the former first capital city of Japan.

Nara was Japan’s first permanent capital in the 8th century, and much of that heritage remains beautifully preserved. At the heart of the city is Nara Park, home to more than 1,000 sacred, semi-tame deer that freely wander the area. Here you’ll also find two of Japan’s most iconic sites: Tōdai-ji Temple, with its giant Great Buddha statue, and Kasuga Taisha, a serene shrine known for its thousands of stone and bronze lanterns.

Located less than an hour from both Kyoto and Osaka, Nara is easily accessible as both a day trip and a full overnight stay.
