Byodo-in Temple, located in Uji, Kyoto, is a renowned Buddhist temple known for its stunning architecture and historical significance. Byodo-in Temple was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. Byodo-in Temple was originally built in the 11th century, and to this day continues to captivate visitors with its beauty.
The main attraction of Byodo-in Temple is the Phoenix Hall, also known as Amida Hall or Hōō-dō. This hall is an exquisite example of Buddhist Pure Land architecture and is featured on the 10 yen coin. The hall’s design represents the Buddhist paradise and is named after the mythical phoenix bird. Its graceful appearance, with sweeping roofs and intricate carvings, showcases the architectural and artistic brilliance of the historic architecture.
The Phoenix Hall consists of a central hall flanked by two corridors, creating a symmetrical layout. The interior houses a statue of Amida Buddha, a significant figure in Pure Land Buddhism. Surrounding the hall is a tranquil pond called Kyōko-chi, which reflects the elegant structure and creates a serene and picturesque setting.
Byodo-in is located alongside the Uji river, where there are many scenic locations to explore. One key feature of the area is Ujibashi, which is a centuries old bridge that crosses the Uji river. Locals and tourists alike often take a pleasant stroll on Tachibana Island, and To-no-shima Island, which provides a great view of the river.
There is a smaller replica of Byodo-in temple in Ohau, Hawai’i, that was built to commemorate 100 years of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawai’i.
