Hotokegaura is a series of striking natural rock formations along the Shimokita Peninsula, on the Aomori coast. The rocks stand out against the calm shoreline and nearby hills. Believed to have formed 20 million years ago by volcanic activity, the Hotokegaura cliffs are among the many features that make Aomori’s coastlines truly unique.
The cliffs stretch for around 2 kilometres along the coastline and rise up to 100 metres high in places. Over thousands of years, wind and waves carved the soft volcanic tuff into surreal formations. Many of the rocks have names based on what they resemble, such as Buddhas, guardians, and lotus flowers.
One of the reasons Hotokegaura feels special is its isolation. The Shimokita Peninsula is already far from Japan’s major tourist trail, and the cliffs themselves are difficult to access except by boat or a steep walking trail. Because of this, the area feels wild and untouched compared to more famous coastal sights in Japan.
