The Hozugawa River Boat Ride, known in Japanese as “Hozugawa Kudari,” is one of Kyoto’s most scenic and traditional outdoor experiences. Running from the nearby city of Kameoka, just a 10 minute train ride from Saga-Arashiyama Station, to Arashiyama through the forested Hozukyo Gorge. The 16 kilometer (approximately 10 miles), and two hour long journey takes passengers through beautiful natural scenery, as skilled boatmen navigate the river’s gentle rapids aboard traditional wooden boats.

Boats depart from Kameoka and gradually wind their way downstream toward Arashiyama, passing steep mountain valleys, rocky cliffs, and densely forested scenery. While some sections of the river are calm and peaceful, several mild rapids add excitement to the ride, often accompanied by jokes and commentary from the boatmen.

Unlike modern sightseeing cruises, the experience feels distinctly traditional. The flat-bottomed wooden boats are steered entirely by boatmen using long bamboo poles and oars, techniques that have been used on the river for centuries. Historically, the river served as an important transportation route for lumber and goods heading toward Kyoto before eventually becoming a tourist attraction during the Meiji period.

It’s important to note that the boat ride is a one-way tour, and bags and other large personal items should be left in storage, or at your hotel for the journey. You may be able to store items at the Kameoka office, however, you will have to return there at your own expense to collect your items.

Traditionally, boats would have been walked up river, using a series of guided ropes along the river to help tug the wooden boats back up river. However, in modern times, the boats are simply put on trucks at the end of the day and taken back to Kameoka for the next day.

Best time to do the Hozugawa River Boat Ride

The boat ride operates year-round, though autumn is generally considered the most spectacular season due to the surrounding fall colours. Reservations are recommended during busy travel periods, especially in November and on weekends.
