Komagatake Ropeway (箱根駒ヶ岳ロープウェー), found in Hakone, one of two sightseeing ropeway systems in the Hakone area. The Komagatake Ropeway takes riders from the shores of Lake Ashinoko, up Mt. Hakone to the Komagatake Peak.
Komagatake Ropeway is not to be mistaken for the Hakone Ropeway however, which takes riders over Mt. Hakone, over Owakudani, and connects the more residential district of Gora, and the hot spring district near Hakoen-Yumoto Staiton. Unlike the Hakone Ropeway, the Hakone Free Pass does not provide free and unlimited travel on the Komagatake Ropeway, but you can still get discounted tickets with the pass.
From the top of the Komagatake Ropeway, visitors can have stunning panoramic views of Mt. Fuji, Lake Ashinoko, and the Sagami bay – providing the weather cooperates. For the best views, be sure to head up Komagatake Ropeway on fine, lightly cloudy days or better.
At the top of the ropeway, you can find several walking trails, including a trail leading up to the summit of the Komagatake Peak, to a shrine, and to several viewing platforms. There are also hiking trails which travel from the base at Lake Ashinoko to the summit. As Mt. Hakone is technically a volcano, the ropeway and hiking trails may close due to volcanic activity.
