Sankeien (三溪園) is a popular Japanese-style garden in southern Yokohama city. The garden is among the best places in Yokohama for Cherry blossom viewing. The garden covers about 175,000 square meters (roughly 43 acres) and includes ponds, streams, hills, and winding paths.
The garden was created in 1906 by Hara Sankei, a wealthy silk trader and philanthropist, who collected traditional Japanese buildings from across the country and relocated them to his garden. His vision was to preserve Japan’s architectural heritage while creating a harmonious garden environment. Sankeien houses 17 traditional structures, including tea houses, merchant homes, and farmhouses from the Edo, Meiji, and early Showa periods. Notably, the Hōmei-den is a traditional hall reconstructed here and often used for exhibitions.
