Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture

Sapporo (札幌) is the capital and largest city of Hokkaido Prefecture. It’s the fifth-largest city in Japan by population and is famous for its unique blend of modern urban life, snowy winters, and vibrant local culture. On average, the city of Sapporo sees over 4.79 meters (15 ft 9 in) of snow each year, and is one of the few metropolitan cities in the world with such high snow fall. 

 

Sapporo is home to the world famous Sapporo Beer, as well as other local specialties such as Sapporo Ramen – a rich miso-based Ramen typically topped with Corn and Butter. Soup Curry is also popular in Sapporo, a spicy soupy curry perfect for the cold winters Sapporo experiences.

Accessing Sapporo

Sapporo is a city in in the south west of Hokkaido Prefecture. The city has several train connections to Otaru in the west, Hakodate to the South, and all the way north to Wakkanai. 

New Chitose Airport can be found just outside of the city’s boundary to the south.
